Episode 6 - Pan In Harmony - The Mighty Jamma
This episode features The Mighty Jamma from Birmingham, England. Jamma began playing pan at age 11 and went on to win three titles: (1987 1998, 1999) National Steel Band Soloist Championship of Great Britain. The 1990’s saw the birth of the Jamma Caribbean Jazz Band. Using the steelpan as a lead instrument, mixed with the sounds of double bass, piano and saxophones giving a new flavor to the UK’s Jazz festivals. Jamma has played around the world including Japan, Trinidad, Europe and the UK and is also the founder of The Birmingham School of Pan, a community school for the youth of Birmingham that gives them a chance to learn Pan and perform.
